One morning I walked down to the Munich train station. My hotel wasn’t serving breakfast yet, and I didn’t know where else to go. Der München Hauptbahnhof didn’t disappoint! I had beer and sausage for breakfast for the first time in my life. It was a Weißbier and a crispy, dark brown bratwurst on a hard roll with spicy mustard. As a bachelor, I’d had many a slice of cold pizza for breakfast, but never this. I was an instant convert. I joined the dozens of working men and women standing at small, high tables eating and drinking exactly the same thing before boarding the train for work. Not only did this experience broaden my concept of “breakfast,” it left me with a love for Weißbier.
Beer aficionados know where to go to get that kind of thing, since it’s not available in the usual 7-Eleven. I’m not a beer expert by any means; I’m more of a dry red wine guy, but during a St. Pete late summer sweltering afternoon nothing will do except a cold beer, preferably imported. Thus it was that a long-time St. Pete resident, friend, and beer lover introduced me to Shep’s, a convenience store that stocks hundreds of hard to find beers. It’s a beer lover’s dream. Best yet, they’ll sell you singles. Shep’s is rated consistently A-/B+ by reviewers at Beer Advocate. You have to watch carefully or you’ll drive right by this place, but it’s worth taking the time to find: 2001 4th St. N., St. Petersburg, FL 33704.

I agree! Sometimes nothing but a cold beer will suffice. The best beer I ever drank was homemade brew in Alaska. It’s the cold mountain streams, you know!
