Samhain

in HOLIDAYS

Two years ago, as part of a FloriMezzo Halloween concert at the Palladium here in St. Pete, I played the famous J.S. Bach Toccata and Fugue in D minor on their beautifully restored 1926 Skinner pipe organ. The portrait above is how I appeared before the audience. Obviously, I’m a ham who knows no shame.

Since this is my first Halloween writing Inkwatu, I thought and thought about what would make a suitable holiday post. I kept rejecting ideas: the historic Greenwood Cemetery in Rosa Park with its history of found voodoo dolls and historic residents was my first thought, but I rejected that because it’s a place of beauty, not horror.

My next thought was of something associated with witches or warlocks, but the Wicca folks, quite undeservedly, get a bum rap on Halloween, I think. (Not to mention their persecution from the earliest days of our country.)

Halloween decorated pastries, pumpkin patches, and carved pumpkins may yet make their appearance, either this year or some following year, but today, I just thought I’d present you with a Halloween treat of an electronic piece of mine, titled, “Samhain.” Samhain is the ancient Celtic holiday that was the precursor of Halloween.

Hope you enjoy it. Just click on the rightward-pointing triangle in the icon below and it should play automatically. It’s free and there’s nothing to download.
